Ashtabula County Metroparks Board President To Discuss the District’s “Vote Green” Levy Campaign on WFUN Radio

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

JEFFERSON, OH – (February 6, 2006)

JEFFERSON, OH – Karen Rang, President of the Ashtabula County Metroparks’ Board of Commissioners, will make a guest appearance on “WFUN AM Today with John Broom”, on WFUN-Radio- 970 AM, Friday, February 17, 2006, from 8:30-9:00 a.m.

Among other topics, Rang will discuss the Parks District’s ten-year levy measure being put before voters on the May 2nd primary election ballot.

The ballot measure seeks voter approval for an Ashtabula County property tax levy of point-four mill (4/10 of a mill). The levy is expected to generate approximately $700,000 annually, for ten years. This is estimated to cost the owner of a house, valued at $100,000, approximately $12.25 a year.

If approved, the Metroparks Board will use the revenues raised to hire a full-time Metroparks Director; one, full-time service ranger/education specialist; plus two part-time office staff persons. Aside from regular administrative and planning duties, the Director and office staff duties will include grant writing, to allow the Metroparks system to tap into State and Federal Grants for current and future projects. Office staff members will also be available to coordinate the Metroparks’ year-round education and recreation programs, which are offered free to the public, and better serve the needs of those using the Metropark system. The Metropark’s Service Ranger will provide additional security throughout the Park system, as well as assisting in providing educational opportunities for Park users.

Levy revenues will also be used to complete and maintain all of the current Metropark properties, including the 26-mile-long Western Reserve Greenway, a popular multi-purpose trail, providing hiking, bicycling, horse-back riding, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. The Greenway stretches north and south through the center of Ashtabula County, linking up in Orwell to the Trumbull County portion of the Greenway. The Western Reserve Greenway is part of the 100-mile long Great Ohio Lake-to-River Greenway project. Plans are being developed to include direct connections to the Western Reserve Greenway from Andover, Geneva, Jefferson and Conneaut.
